The Rugby League Challenge Cup has been in existence since 1896, although the format has changed dramatically as the game has evolved. These days there are seven rounds, with the earlier rounds being contested by amateur teams, who round by round are either eliminated or joined by teams from the services, the Russian Rugby League, University teams etc. The competition does not become serious until the 4th round when the 14 Super League teams join in with what will be a remaining 18 teams who have made it this far
Wigan Warriors hold the record for the amount of wins with 17, with St Helens next on 12, but current champions are Warrington Wolves who defeated Huddersfield Giants 25-16 in the 2009 Final at Wembley.
The finals have been played at Wembley since 1945/6, although whilst it was being redeveloped between 2000 and 2007 it was played at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff and Twickenham also in London.
