Turkish F1 GP Betting Preview: McLaren and Hamilton can defy Red Bull

The Red Bull team of Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel, who have dominated qualifying sessions throughout the 2010 season, now seem to have a clear upper hand in the actual GP’s, having won three of the last four between them. In addition to sharing top spot in the overall driver’s championship with 78 points apiece, they also now dispute favouritism in the betting ahead of this week’s Turkish GP at the extremely popular Istanbul Park Circuit. Vettel is currently the 7/4 favourite with Ladbrokes to win the race, while Webber, winner of the last two GP’s is 2/1 with the same Bookmaker.

Certainly the track at Istanbul Park is almost certain to suit the Red Bulls in qualifying due to the ability of their cars to generate downforce with little drag. This asset alone may be enough for the two drivers to start on the front row of the grid come Sunday, but it is possible that they may need more speed in the race itself. Indeed, considering Red Bull has won pole position in every race so far this year, both drivers are worth considering to do so again with Vettel at 11/8 and Webber 7/4.

Despite a somewhat lacklustre season thus far, Felipe Massa of Ferrari should not be ruled out of proceedings in Istanbul. He won this race in 2006, 2007 and 2008 and is currently negotiating a new contract with his team for next season. He has every incentive to outshine his more illustrious team mate and is worth a punt on gaining a podium finish at least, with odds of 11/4 from Ladbrokes Bookmakers.

The McLaren team expect bigger and better things this week after a experiencing a bad time of it in Monaco. Their two drivers, Lewis Hamilton and defending world champion, Jenson Button, are still very much in the championship, but of the two recently, despite his results, it is Hamilton who looks the most likely to mount a serious challenge to the Red Bulls. The 2008 world champion is a 5/1 chance to win the race this week and a very tempting 7/1 to grab pole position.
