Valtteri Bottas Is The Value Shout For The Austrian Grand Prix
The Austrian Grand Prix returned to the calendar in 2014 following an eleven year absence. On that occasion, and in 2015, five of the first six cars home were powered by Mercedes engines.

|Max Verstappen To Retire First||@ 16 / 1|
Last season bucked the trend with two Red Bulls (using a Renault/TAG-Heuer power plant), Kimi Raikkonen’s Ferrari and a Jenson Button driven McLaren all finishing within the top-six. It has been three-from-three for Mercedes race wins here though, with Hamilton scoring in 2016 and Rosberg on both occasions beforehand.
There are just ten corners at Spielberg’s Red Bull Ring, the fewest on the calendar, and, at 4.3km this is the fourth-shortest circuit on the F1 roster; it features the fastest lap time of all. Last year Hamilton clocked 1:07.922 when claiming pole position and, remarkably, the fastest lap of the race was just 0.5 seconds slower (1:08.411).
The small margin between these two marks – it was almost five seconds at Monza and Spa last season – infers something. Just what that might be is not entirely clear, albeit the fact this track is very abrasive and required the main protagonists to take late pit-stops (laps 55 and 56 of 71) may have something to do with it.
Bott’s The 9/2 Value
With the top-two in the betting very short (it is 4/5 Hamilton and 9/4 Vettel), Valtteri Bottas is the value shout (9/2 with Bet 365). The Finn has taken five podium finishes this season including his maiden win. More importantly, in 2014 he started on the front row of the grid and finished third in his Williams.
It may be worth holding out for a bigger price sometime during Friday or Saturday morning. One may well be forthcoming because Bottas has only once topped the time sheets of a practice session in his entire F1 career (OK, that was Practice 3 in Baku last time).
Raikkonen Last Of The Fast Late Stoppers?
There is a gulf in class between Raikkonen and Vettel, as underlined by the Finn being 20/1 for the race win and his teammate 18 points shorter, but the veteran knows how to set the fastest lap of a race and he has done that twice already this season.
Traditionally kind to his tyres, it is not hard to envisage his team sending him out on a strategy which will involve him pitting very late into the race where he would apply the fastest compound tyres. Raikkonen is 7/1 to drive the fastest lap (Sky Bet).
Max Verstappen has not been discreet when it comes to ruing his bad luck. He has retired from four of the last six races (on lap 11, lap 1, lap 10 and lap 12). Team boss Christian Horner has recently stated “these things level themselves out” but he did not say when the tide would turn for his driver.
Indeed, the tide could still be out for the Dutch pilot and so, at 16/1 (SkyBet.com), it’s a fair proposition that he will be the first to retire from Sunday’s race.
