The World Hurdle Betting

The Grade One World Hurdle is the Champions race for the top staying hurdlers in the National Hunt, which is open to horses four years old and above. It is run over 3 miles and is the highlight of Day Three at the annual Cheltenham Festival.

Winner in 2009 was the Paul Nicholls trained, Big Bucks, who imperiously held off the challenge of pre-race favourite, Punchestowns in a fantastic finish, proving himself in the process to be the best staying hurdler on either side of the Irish Sea. Big Bucks justified favouritism to repeat the success at the 2010 and 2011 Cheltenham Festivals to stake his claims as one of the all time greats alongside Inglis Drever.

It has been run since 1972 and its greatest winners include the great Inglis Drever, regarded by many as the greatest staying hurdler of all time. Inglis Drever won the World Hurdle three times in 2005, 2007 and 2008 and only injury denied him the win in the 2006 renewal. Another great star of the race was the Francois Doumen trained, Baracouda, winner in both 2002 and 2003.

Big Buck's wrote himself into the history books with a thrilling win from Grands Crus. The 8-year-old sealed his third successive World Hurdle win to join Inglis Drever as the only horse to win the race three times as he well and truly justified ante-post favouritism. Grands Crus ran gamely to challenge but couldn't keep pace, while Mourad finished third.
