Home / Horse Racing / Victor Chandler Chase
The Victor Chandler Chase is an important race in the national hunt calendar as it often includes some of the leading contenders for the Queen Mother Champion Chase at Cheltenham Festival in March.
The Victor Chandler Chase takes place towards the end of January each year and is a prime opportunity for punters to take a look at the form and odds of horses before placing their ante-post bets for the Cheltenham Festival.
The race itself is a Grade 1 race for 5 year olds and over, and it is raced over a distance of 2 miles and 1 furlong with 13 fences to be jumped at the prestigious Ascot racecourse.
Its importance for the Cheltenham Festival is highlighted by the fact that three horses have won the Victor Chandler Chase and gone on to claim the Champion Chase in the same season - they are Viking Flagship, Call Equiname and Master Minded. In fact Master Minded has claimed the Champion Chase twice, once in 2008 where he beat odds on favourite and reigning champion Voy Por Ustedes and again in 2009 where he justified his odds on favouritism, to go along with victories in the popular Tingle Creek Chase in 2008 and 2010.

The highlight of the second day of the Cheltenham Festival in March is the most prestigious 2 mile chase in national hunt racing, the Queen Mother Champion Chase.
Top trainers such as Paul Nicholls, Philip Hobbs and Nicky Henderson have enjoyed success in the past. It was Nicholls' Master Minded who set the race alight in 2008 and 2009 with successive victories, while Big Zeb denied Master Minded a hat trick to claim glory in 2010.
The race always makes for a great spectacle and it is always worth looking out for those Paul Nicholls trained horses for a punt......
