The Open meeting, at the famous Cheltenham Racecourse, involves three days of high quality horse racing during November, and it represents a real highlight of the horse racing calendar. It is probably the most important meeting of the first half of the jumps season as it plays such a key part in form for the rest of the season. Some of the top horses from around Europe compete throughout the weekend which makes for some really competitive betting opportunities. There is plenty to play for as the weekend's racing involves a £750,000 prize purse.
The Friday's Countryside Day kicks proceedings off for an exciting weekend of racing, and one of the highlights for punters and racers alike is always the Sharp Novices' Hurdle. The grade 2 race for 4 year olds and over provides an excellent spectacle and often throws up interesting betting opportunities. Other highlights for the day will be the handicap chase, cross country chase and the jockeys' handicap hurdle, which will all provide a great opportunity for punters to have a bet.
The Saturday is Paddy Power Gold Cup day, and as the name suggests the main race of the day is the Paddy Power Gold Cup. It is one of the stand out races, not only of the day, but of the whole weekend. It has witnessed some great European horses and jockeys in the past, with the like of Cheltenham Gold Cup winner Imperial Commander and Tony McCoy enjoying success, and it always draws in the crowdsand punters for what should be a thrilling race. The race really gets the jumps season underway, while there are five other competitive races during the day. Make sure to check out the latest odds leading up to the race and keep an eye on those odds for Cheltenham.
The Open Sunday rounds off an excellent weekend of racing, and the highlight without a doubt will be The Greatwood Hurdle. The race is always made up of the future stars of horse racing hurdles, and horses such as Kyber Kim, who won the 2009 Greatwood Hurdle before finishing second in the 2010 Champion Hurdle, have gone on to enjoy success at March's Cheltenham Festival. The Hurdle alone offers a £100,000 prize purse, and the rest of the day features five more top races to bring the weekend to a close.

The Open at Cheltenham is a great chance for preparations to begin during this early part of the season, particularly as all eyes look towards the pinnacle of the national hunt season, the Cheltenham Festival. Kyber Kim finished second in the Greatwood Hurdle in 2009 and went on to finish second in the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham Festival, while 2009 Paddy Power Gold Cup winner Imperial Commander went on to claim the Cheltenham Gold Cup in 2010, which highlights the value of a good performance at The Open.
It is a great opportunity to gauge where many of the horses are in their preparations for the festival, with the four day event in March very much in everyone's thoughts.
The Cheltenham Festival is hugely popular and tickets are always sold out well in advance. Previous festivals have provided entertainment and drama in equal measure, and the upcoming festival is sure to be as highly anticipated as ever.
