Sussex Stakes Betting

This Group One race over 1 mile for thoroughbred aged three years or older, takes place on the second day of the Glorious Goodwood racing festival. The race is one of the most important races over this distance in the country and always attracts a strong field, made up of several Group One quality race horses. It is one of the two Group One races held during the Glorious Goodwood, the other being the equally famous Nassau Stakes for fillies and mares.

The race has a long history which actually dates back to 1841, when it was run over 6 furlongs for colts only. After several revamps, which included lengthening the race to 1 mile the Sussex Stakes became open to horses aged 5 years and older in 1975 and since then it has become the most prestigious race of the meeting.

The roll of honour of past winners of the race is very impressive and includes the likes of the legendary, Brigadier Gerard, Kris, Giants Causeway and Rock Of Gibraltar, all Classic winners. Trainer, Aidan O’Brien has won the race for the last two seasons with Henrythenavigator and Rip Van Winkle. Henry Cecil however is the leading trainer, with five winners, the last one coming in 1997, when Ali-Royal won.

The unbeaten Frankel confirmed his awesome reputation with a breathtaking five length win over Canford Cliffs in a race that had been dubbed the 'Duel of the Downs'. The 3-year-old made it eight wins from eight as the colt accelerated impressively over the final furlong to leave Canford Cliffs in his wake.
