Stewards Cup Betting

The Stewards Cup is one of the big betting Handicap races held on the final day of the Glorious Goodwood Festival at the end of July until the very early part of August. It is run over six challenging furlongs and is open to both thoroughbred colts and fillies aged three years or older. The race always attracts a large field of runners and it is worth closely studying form.

The race dates back to the 1830s, but was first run as an independent Stewards Cup in 1840. It carries a very valuable prize and is currently sponsored by Blue Square Bookmakers.

Horses trained by Roger Charlton have usually run well in this race, in fact he has had three recent winners, including Genki, who won the race in 2009 with odds of 14/1.

The race has never been a good one for favourites, indeed only four favourites or joint favourites have won the race in the last 25 years. Although the last one to do so was Zidane, trained by James Fanshawe, at 6/1 in 2007.

Hoof It hacked up with a brilliant display in the 2011 Steward's Cup as the 13/2 joint favourite eased into the lead after the first furlong and never looked in trouble as he beat Tax Free by two and a half lengths. Mac's Power came in third a further head back.
