The Scottish National is the biggest National Hunt race held in Scotland during the calendar year, and has always being run in the period between the Aintree marathon and the Betfred Gold Cup, at Sandown. The three races in fact have become the traditional finale to the steeple chasing season. Beshabar, a 15/2 ante-post punt, produced a strong performance as the 9-year-old claimed a front running victory to beat last year's winner Merigo by three quarters of a length. Always Right came in third, just a neck back from Merigo, but there was disappointment for ante-post favourite Chicago Grey as he finished eighth and was never in the mix.
