The Sandown Mile in April is an exciting betting opportunity after the excitement of the Cheltenham Festival and Grand National prior to the race. As the name would suggest it is run at Sandown Park and involves a distance of 1 mile and 14 yards.
It was first established in 1985 and is open to thoroughbred horses aged four and over, and as a Group 2 flat race it is sure to attract plenty of quality from the world of horse racing.
In recent times there have been some high quality winners, not least Paco Boy, who won here twice when well fancied in the betting. Trainer Richard Hannon guided Paco Boy to those glories and also won the prestigious Lockingie Stakes. Those wins mean Paco Boy is the joint most successful horse in the Sandown Mile as Hurricane Alan also claimed two victories (2004, 2005), and Hannon was also trainer of Hurricane Alan which makes him the most successful trainer in the race with five wins (2004, 2005, 2008, 2009, 2010). It could prove worthwhile to look out for the form of those Richard Hannon trained horses and their odds.
The race carries a prize purse of £100,000 and is run during an exciting meeting at Sandown that includes both flat and jumps racing, and it is a great opportunity for punters to get involved in the ante-post betting throughout the weekend. Other races during the meeting include the Bet365 Gold Cup, the Gordon Richards Stakes and the Celebration Chase.

The Bet365 Gold Cup, or the Whitbread Gold Cup as it is also known, takes place at Sandown during the same meeting as the Sandown Mile. It is an exciting race that has seen many famous winners in the past, including Desert Orchid.
The race is known to 'drop the curtain' on the national hunt season and there is plenty of value to be found in the odds, as was witnessed in 2010 when Church Island came through to win after being 20/1 in the ante-post betting.
There could be similar value to be found for the eagle-eyed punter again this year......
