Home / Horse Racing / Ryanair Novice Chase
The Ryanair Novice Chase is part of the exciting Punchestown Festival during late April or early May at Punchestown racecourse. The Festival is effectively an Irish version of the Cheltenham Festival, although it stretches out over five days of racing.
The Ryanair is a Grade 1 Chase for novice chasers aged 5-years-old and over. The race involves a trip of 2 miles and there are eleven fences to be negotiated along the way.
Its relevance to the Cheltenham Festival is highlighted by the fact that many runners from the Arkle Trophy at Cheltenham go on to compete at Punchestown. Moscow Flyer won both races in the same season in 2002 and punters could well find some value in the odds for another horse to achieve that this season.
Betting doubles on both festivals are often very popular and can prove fruitful and it is worth noting that Captain Cee Bee, winner in 2010, went on to finish a very respectable third in the 2011 Queen Mother Champion Chase, and 2008 winner Big Zeb went on to win the Queen Mother Champion Chase in 2010.
