The Relkeel Hurdle takes place each year at Cheltenham racecourse in December, just as the national hunt season is really beginning to hot up. Most horses are race fit by now and there is always huge betting interest at this time of the season.
The Grade Two race on the New Course involves a trip of two miles and four and a half furlongs, with ten hurdles to be jumped along the way. It is open to horses aged four and over and it is seen as an important race in the build up to the Cheltenham Festival in March.
The race is seen as an important trial for the Champion Hurdle in March and many winners have gone on to try their luck in the prestigious Festival race. 2009 winner, French raider Zaynar, went on to finish third to the irrepressible Binocular in the Champion Hurdle from odds of 15/2.
It highlights the value of the Relkeel Hurdle for later in the season and it is well worth keeping an eye on the latest odds of Relkeel contenders when considering your betting for the rest of the season.
Other points to note when looking at the ante-post odds for the Relkeel Hurdle is the fact that Alan King has trained three winners since the race was established in 2000, while champion jockey Tony McCoy and Robert Thornton have each ridden two winners.

It doesn't get much bigger than the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham Festival as it is the highest rated race for hurdlers in the country. It takes place on the opening day of the meeting in March and is a hugely competitive betting heat.
Some very fine horses have won the race in the past, not least Hurricane Fly, Binocular, Rooster Booster and Hardy Eustace, while plenty of the recent winners have come across from Ireland.
It will be interesting to see if this year's winner comes from the Emerald Isle and the Irish contenders are sure to receive plenty of support in the ante-post betting.....
