The Queen Mother Champion Chase is the most prestigious two mile chase in National Hunt racing and is the highlight of racing on Day 2 of the annual Cheltenham Festival. It is open to horses aged five years or older and has an awesome roll of honour of past winners. Horses who win this race have to have a top class combination of galloping pace and jumping skills and have enough staying power to see them home up the infamous Cheltenham Hill.

The Paul Nicholls trained, Master Minded has won the race for the past two years and is favourite to make it a hat trick of wins this season. However a set back, following a dismal third place behind Well Chief in the Connaught Chase in November, has affected his seasonal programme and it cannot be sure if he will come to the race in peak fitness. If he does not perform then his stablemate, Twist Magic. might be the one to look at.Although no great performer at Cheltenham, this horse has looked mightily impressive this season, when winning the Tingle Creek and the Victor Chandler Chases.
This year the race falls on St Patrick’s Day and as usual at Cheltenham there will be thousands of Irish voices cheering on the lead Irish challengers, Big Zeb, who almost got the better of Master Minded in the Irish Champion Chase at Punchestown at the end of last season and Forpadydaplasterer, winner of the 2009 Arkle Trophy Chase.
Some of those past winners of the race include Flyingbolt in 1966, the heroic Crisp, won the race in 1971, two years before that unforgettable 1973 Grand National where he narrowly failed to hold off the challenge of Red Rum. More recent winners include Moscow Flyer, who won twice in 2003 and 2005 and the David Nicholson trained, Viking Flagship who won the race in 1994 and 1995.
One of the great trial races for the Queen Mother Champion Chase is the Grade One Tingle Creek Chase which is raced at Sandown Park each December. Also run over two miles, the horses have to negotiate 13 fences and be 4 years of age or older.
Winner on 2009 was the Paul Nicholls trained, Twist Magic, who also won the race in 2007. He is a main contender for the Queen Mother Champion Chase as his revered stablemate, Master Minded, who won this race in 2008 and is a twice a winner of the Champion Chase.
