The Punchestown Gold Cup is one of the highlights of the Punchestown Festival at the Punchestown racecourse in late April or early May. The festival is a 5 day meeting that offers a variety of horse racing betting opportunities for punters and the Gold Cup takes place on the second day. In 2012 the race has been moved to the Saturday following high winds at the track.
The race itself is a Grade 1 chase for horses aged 5-years-old and over. Interestingly it used to be open to novice chasers only but it was changed to its current format in 1999. The race involves a distance of 3 miles and 1 furlong and there are 17 fences to be jumped along the way.
It is a great betting opportunity that often features some strong performers and there are usually several contenders from the Cheltenham Festival Gold Cup in attendance as well. Punters could even be tempted to have a look at the latest odds for a horse winning both versions of the race, as War Of Attrition did in 2006 and in the process pleased several who had him as part of a betting double.

The World Series Hurdle takes place on the third day of Punchestown Festival and is an entertaining part of the five day meeting at Punchestown racecourse.
It is one of several high quality Grade One races at the meeting and many of the contenders from the World Hurdle at Cheltenham Festival the previous month are likely to be in action.
Anzum won both races in the same season in 1999 and bookmakers are likely to offer tempting odds for a horse to repeat that feat this year.....
