The Punchestown Champion Hurdle is a Grade 1 race for horses aged 4-years-old and over. The national hunt race involves a trip of 2 miles and there are nine hurdles to be negotiated along the way. The race takes place each year at the prestigious Punchestown Festival in Ireland during late April or early May.
The Festival is the Irish equivalent of Britain's Cheltenham Festival and there are plenty of horses that feature strongly at both meetings, and that is well worth remembering when looking at the ante-post odds. Both meetings offer a range of betting opportunities and it could be worth looking out for the Cheltenham performers when considering a bet on the Irish version, and vice versa
Hurricane Fly won the 2010 Punchestown Champion Hurdle and followed that up with victory in the 2011 Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham.
Meanwhile, there is also the option of a betting double on a horse winning both races in the same season as Hardy Eustace did in 2004.
Other races at the Punchestown Festival include:

The Memorial Champion Novice Hurdle, like the Punchestown Champion Hurdle, takes place on the fourth day of the Punchestown Festival and is one of the main betting opportunities thanks to its Grade 1 status and stellar field.
Many of the runners will have been seen as recently as the Cheltenham Festival as several travel on from the Neptune Investment Management Novices' Hurdle and Mikael D'Haguenet managed to win both races in 2009.
It is sure to be a hugely competitive race again this year with plenty of interest in the odds.....
