Phoenix Stakes Betting

The Phoenix Stakes takes place each year at the Curragh in August and it follows hot on the heels of some top notch flat racing and betting opportunities at the Goodwood Festival and the Galway Festival.

It is a high class race in its own right and is always extremely popular for betting as it is a Group One race. It involves a distance of six furlongs and it is open to 2-year-old fillies and colts.

The race has undergone plenty of changes over the years as it was originally known as the Phoenix Plate, when it was contested over five furlongs. It was then extended to six furlongs in the 1980s and it was promoted to Group One status 1979.

In terms of betting on the race and considering the ante-post odds, there is one stable that stands out and demands respect. Legendary flat racing trainer Aidan O'Brien has won this race eleven times, including eleven of the thirteen renewals from between 1998 and 2010.

La Collina upset the odds to win the Phoenix Stakes from 33/1 after she came from an impossible position to snatch victory over the last few strides and beat 7/4 favourite Power by a neck.
