Old Roan Chase Betting

The Old Roan Chase at Aintree in October is one of the early highlights in the national hunt season and an early opportunity for punters to have a bet on a jumps race.

It is a Grade Two race for horses aged four years and over, and it has witnessed some exceptional winners over the years. This limited handicap race involves a distance of two miles, four furlongs and there are sixteen jumps to be negotiated as entries take to the Mildmay Course at Aintree.

It was first run in 2004, under the name of the Wigan Chase, and there have seen some exceptional winners of the race over the years.

The most successful horse was Monet's Garden, who claimed victory for trainer Nicky Richards three times - in 2007, 2009 and 2010. There was huge interest in the betting for the race in 2007 as Monet's Garden took on the 2006 champion Kauto Star, who of course is now a dual-Cheltenham Gold Cup winner.

Monet's Garden, who also won the 2008 Peterborough Chase, was denied victory in 2008 as Knowhere upset the odds to defeat the defending champion, and there is sure to be another strong field for this year's renewal of the £50,000 race.

Albertas Run held off a valiant challenge from 20/1 outsider Pure Faith to eventually win by a length, with odds on ante-post favourite Master Minded well beaten, seven lengths further back, as only three horses went to post.
