Northumberland Plate Betting

Run over two miles at Newcastle every June, the Northumberland Plate is one of the most popular betting races in the UK. It has also become one of the richest two mile handicaps in the world with prize money not far short of £200, 000.

The race was established way back in 1833 and is popularly known as the Pitman’s Derby as in its early years local miners were given the day off to go and watch it. These days it is sponsored by John Smiths and the quality of runner has noticeably improved the longer the race stays in existence. The popular horse race has a maximum field of 20 runners.

There was a 25/1 winner of the Plate in 2011 as Tominator took glory by a length and three quarters from Montaff. Defending champion Overturn had set the pace but finished sixth in the end, with Deauville Flyer taking third.
