Home / Horse Racing / Nassau Stakes
This Group One race over almost 10 furlongs for fillies and mares takes place on the final day of the Glorious Goodwood racing festival at the very end of July or very early August. It is one of the two Group One races held during the week, the other being the equally famous Sussex Stakes.
The race has a long history and takes its name from the friendship between the original owner of Goodwood racecourse, the 5th Duke of Richmond and the House of Orange-Nassau, who were once part of the Dutch Monarchy. It was first raced in 1840.
High quality races always attracts high quality runners and the Nassau Stakes is no different. Its roll of honour of past winners is very impressive and includes Pretty Polly in 1904, one of the very few fillies in history to achieve the fillies Triple Crown. More recent winners include the magnificent Ouija Board in 2006, Peeping Fawn in 2007 and last year, Midday, trained by Henry Cecil.
Leading trainer’s with eight wins is Sir Henry Cecil while Sir Michael Stoute has trained seven winners. Stoute trained three different winners in three consecutive years between 2002-2004; all of which were ridden, by former champion jockey, Kieran Fallon.
