The Monksfield Novice Hurdle is an opportunity to take a look at the prospects of novice hurdlers from Ireland. The field for this Grade Two is usually dominated by Irish contenders and it is often an exciting betting heat at Navan racecourse.
It takes place each year during November and it is open to horses aged four years and over, with the hopefuls taking on a 2 mile and 4 furlong trip.
The race itself is named after the successful Irish hurdler Monksfield, who won the Aintree Hurdle and the Champion Hurdle during the 1970s. It was originally a Grade Three affair but was promoted to its current Grade Two status in 2008.
It has been dominated by Irish trained horses over the years and it is well worth looking out for entries from some of the top Irish stables in the ante-post betting. Edward O'Grady can lay claim to three winners, as can Noel Meade, who has won two of the past four renewals at Navan and his entries demand respect when looking at the odds.
An interesting trend for those who like their statistics when betting is that 14 of the 17 winners to date have been 5 years old.
