Matron Stakes Betting

The Matron Stakes is a Group 1 horse race run at Leopardstown Racecourse every year in September. The race is run over a distance of one mile and is available to fillies and mares only. The current purse for the race is around €250,000 and the racecard attracts plenty of attention from British trained horses. In fact, the British based trainers have dominated the race in recent seasons with seven wins in the last ten years, including two by Sir Michael Stoute.

The race was formally called the Gilltown Stud Stakes and was run at the Curragh. However, it was changed to the Matron Stakes in the mid eighties and give a Group 1 level and recently transferred to Leopardstown to form part of their Champions day, where the feature is the Irish Champion Stakes.

Previous winners of the race include star fillies Lilly Langtry, Lush Lashes, Attraction and Soviet Song and the race has become a must for many of the top milers.
