The Long Walk Hurdle is held at the prestigious Ascot racecourse during December each year, although it has been held at other venues in the past due to snow and redevelopment work. The race itself is a Grade 1 National Hunt hurdle for 4 year olds and over, and it is 3 miles and 1 furlong in length with 14 hurdles to be negotiated in all.
The race was first run in 1965, and the name The Long Walk is derived from the Great Park in Windsor's avenue of trees.
Historically the Long Walk Hurdle has been a good trial run for the World Hurdle at Cheltenham Festival in March, as four previous winners have gone on to claim victory in Cheltenham, including Big Buck's in the 2009/10 season. That is well worth noting in the betting as the ante-post favourite here could provide a good indicator of what to look for in the betting at Cheltenham.
Baracouda is the most successful horse in the Long Walk Hurdle, winning four times in 2000, 2001, 2003 and 2004. When considering the odds for the race thre has been a trend for winners of this race to be between 5 and 9 years of age.

The World Hurdle is the feature race of the third day at the season highlight of the Cheltenham Festival. Several winners of the Long Walk Hurdle have gone on the win the World Hurdle so the race at Ascot is an important race in preparation for the big one at Cheltenham in March.
