JLT Lockinge Stakes Betting

One of the most eagerly anticipated horse racing flat races of the season, the Totesport.com Lockinge Stakes is run over 1 mile at Newbury in mid-May. It is a Group One race, for horses aged 3 or over and is often considered to be a trial for the following month’s Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Some of the big names who managed to get their names engraved on the Roll of Honour for the race were dual winner, Welsh Pageant and the almost incomparable, Brigadier Gerrard, who won the race as a 4 year old in 1972 More recently, Hawk Wing, trained by Aidan O’Brien won the race in 2003 after winning the Eclipse Stakes the year previously. This horse was generally regarded as the unlucky runner up to Rock Of Gibraltar in the Two Thousand Guineas of 2001, which he followed up by finishing runner up to stablemate High Chaparral in the Epsom Derby a few weeks later.

Leading trainer with a runner is likely to be Sir Michael Stoute, who has saddled seven winners of the race, most recently with Peeress in 2006. While top jockey down the years has been the inevitable Lester Piggott, with six wins.

Winner in 2009 was the John Gosden trained, Virtual, who was ridden by Jimmy Fortune. The win provided Gosden with his second winner of the race.

Punters are advised to look out for horses owned by either Godolphin or the Cheveley Park Stud in this race, between them their horses have won the race eight times from the last twelve renewals!
