It also has the name of the legendary name of Lester Piggott permanently connected to the race due to his outstanding ten winning rides. The most successful jockey of recent times has been John Egan who rode successive winners in 2005 and 2006, however it is fair to say that no jockey or trainer, for that matter have dominated the race since the days of Piggott.

One of the great races to take place at Newmarket is of course is the 2000 Guineas, which is the first of the annual colts Classics. Raced on Newmarket’s other course, the Rowley Mile. The race is open to the very best 3 year old colts and is run over one mile of undulating course and usually provides a winner who will go onto bigger and better things, such as the Epsom Derby and perhaps even the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
The race always takes place at the beginning of May and was won in 2010 by Mafki, who is trained in France by Mikel Delzangles.
Antepost Betting for the next 2000 Guineas begins almost as soon as the race concludes, making it therefore an almost perpetual betting market.
