John Durkan Memorial Chase Betting

The John Durkan Memorial Chase is a Grade 1 national hunt race for 5 year olds and over held at the famous Punchestown racecourse in Ireland. The race, formerly known as the Punchestown Chase, is held during early December each year and is run over a distance of 2 miles and 4 furlongs.

It was established in 1968 when it was run over 2 miles until 1973 when it changed to its current distance, and it has always been a race that bring in the crowds to Punchestown.

In terms of betting on the race it has been won ten of the last ten times by horses who had won over 2 miles and four furlongs previously, those who had ridden 40 days before the race and 9 of the last 10 finished in the top three in their previous race. It is worth looking out for these trends when brosing the odds and considering your ante-post bet; more often than not it is worth looking out for the ante-post favourite.

It has been won by several great names in horse racing including Beef or Salmon, Kicking King and the consistent two time winner Native Upmanship. The most successful trainer was Jim Dreaper who had 7 winners spanning over a period of 21 years.
