The JNwine.com Champion Chase takes place during early November each year at the Down Royal racecourse in Northern Ireland. It is open to horses aged 5 years and above, and it the first Grade 1 National Hunt Chase in the Irish National Hunt horse racing season.

The 3 mile event first took place in 1999, and it has hosted some of the greats of horse racing during that time and also witnessed its fair share of drama. In 2005 the drama wasn't due to the racing unfortunately, as the race was abandoned due to telephoned bomb threats against the course. Thankfully that was a one off and all of the other races have witnessed entertainment and great horse racing.

Kauto Star, trained by Paul Nicholls, is widely recognised as one of the all time great National Hunt horses and he is a previous Chase winner. His sole JNwine Champion Chase victory came in 2008, and he trails Beef or Salmon, who has two titles to his name, on the winner's board.

Beef or Salmon won in 2004 and 2006 when he was 8 and 10 years old respectively, and interestingly a racing trend indicates that 7 of the 10 winners were aged 8 or 10 years of age. Also, 8 of the 10 winners finished either first or second in their last race before the Chase. It's worth keeping these stats in mind when placing your bet for the race, as you can have a good look out for similar horses in the ante-post betting and race odds.

Quito De La Roque earned a thrilling victory from Sizing Europe in the 2011 renewal of the race at Down Royal. Colm Murphy's 11/4 favourite managed to grind out a length and a quarter win and was immediately clipped in in the odds for the 2012 Cheltenham Gold Cup.
