The Irish Oaks is the Irish equivalent of the Epsom Oaks, which of course takes place during the Epsom Derby meeting in June.
The Irish version though takes place in July at the Curragh and it is open to 3-year-old thoroughbred fillies. The race itself involves a distance of 1 mile and 4 furlongs.
It is a prime betting opportunity as it is a Group One race and often attracts some of the finest fillies from flat racing. More often than not, leading contenders from the Epsom Oaks will go on to compete in the Irish Oaks and that is well worth remembering when considering the odds and ante-post betting.
From a betting perspective, it is also worth noting that Epsom Oaks winners have gone on to win the Irish equivalent, with Snow Fairy achieving the feat in 2010 and the odds of a filly achieving it again this year could be very tempting indeed.
As you would expect, trainer Aidan O'Brien has a fine record in the Irish Oaks, winning for three consecutive years from 2006-2008 and fillies from his stables are well worth looking out for. Although Sir Michael Stoute is the leading trainer with ten winners to his name over the years.
Furthermore, contenders from the Irish Oaks may go on to compete in the prestigious Yorkshire Oaks in August, so you might want to consider following your fancies from Curragh to York and hopefully reap a healthy return.
