Irish St Leger Betting

The Irish Field St Leger is a Group One race over 1 mile and six furlongs which is raced at the Curragh every September, usually on the same day as the English St Leger. It was originally modelled on the English St Leger in fact but was opened up to older horses in 1983, in order to increase the field size and the quality.

Since the change the race has had several repeat winners, including horses of the calibre of the Dermot Weld trained, Vintage Crop, who went on to win the Melbourne Cup in 1993, Oscar Schindler, Kayf Tara and of course the extraordinary Vinnie Roe, also trained by Dermot Weld, who holds the record of four wins in the race between 2001 and 2005.

English St Leger Runners

The Irish Field St Leger was originally modelled on the English version which is raced at Doncaster, usually on the same day. The big difference between the English version and the Irish is that it is open to three year old colts and fillies only and is the final classic of the English flat season.number of runners.

It was won in 2009 by the Godolphin trained Mastery who became the fifth winner for 'Royal Blues'. The 2010 race was won by Arctic Cosmos, and 2011 should provide plenty of interest in the betting markets......
