Originally known as the Benson & Hedges Gold Cup, the International Stakes is a prestigious Group One race ran over the Knavesmire racecourse at York, over a distance of 10½ furlongs. It is open to thoroughbreds aged 3 years and over and was won last year by the now legendary Sea The Stars. It is held during the York Ebor meeting in August.
Sea The Stars is just one of many outstanding winners of this great race, who include greats such as Roberto, Dahlia, Troy and Giants Causeway, however perhaps its most famous runner was actually a loser when Brigadier Gerard, who was beaten into second place the inaugural race of 1972 by Roberto. Amazingly it was the brilliant colt’s only defeat in an 18 race career.
In the ante-post betting there are a number of trainers that are worth following if of course they have runners in the race. Aidan O’Brien is sure to have an entry or two, who will be looking to add a third win in the race for the outstanding trainer. Sir Michael Stoute in fact holds the record of five winners, while Godolphin are one back on four, the last coming in 2004. Top jockey of recent times is the ever popular, Frankie Dettori with five winners, a total which equals that of the great Lester Piggott.

Owner Prince Khalid Abdullah enjoyed great success in the 2011 renewal as the Sir Henry Cecil-trained pair of Twice Over and Midday produced a stunning one-two. The pair battled it out over the final furlong and four-time Group One winner Twice Over just managed to forge ahead to take victory from six-time Group One winner Midday, with ante-post favourite Await The Dawn left floundering.

Known more commonly as the 'King George' this race takes place in July each year at Ascot and for many it provides a rehearsal for the Arc de Triomphe which takes place in October.
There will be several runners who take part in this race who will also be declared for the International Stakes, although there is a difference of almost 2 furlongs.
It is a Group One race and is open to both colts and fillies aged three years and over.
