Home / Horse Racing / Hungerford Stakes
The Hungerford Stakes has attracted plenty of top quality thoroughbred from the world of flat racing in the past, not least 2008 winner Paco Boy, who won the prestigious Lockinge Stakes and Royal Ascot's Queen Anne Stakes.
The Hungerford itself is run at Newbury during August ahead of the next big flat racing meeting - the Ebor. The race is a popular betting opportunity in its own right as it holds Group Two status and is run over a distance of seven furlongs.
When considering the ante-post betting it is well worth noting that Frankie Dettori has enjoyed great success in the race, notching up six wins, and whoever he saddles could be worth following in the odds. Meanwhile, Sir Henry Cecil and John Gosden lead the way for trainers with four wins apiece and the odds of horses from their stables demand respect.
The race is always popular with punters and the excitement on offer was highlighted in 1994 when Young Ern and Pollen Count shared victory in a dead heat, and this year's renewal promises to be equally competitive.

Having been beaten by Frankel twice already this season, the 3-year-old added to a seven length German Guineas success after being backed into 5/4 favouritism in the ante-post betting.

The Melbourne Cup in November is one of the biggest race days in the world and virtually the whole of Australia stops for this exciting for three year olds.
Billed 'the race that stops a nation' it takes place at the Flemington racecourse and is a fantastic betting opportunity as so many high class horses compete. Bart Cummings is the most successful trainer in the race and it is going to take something special to match his feat as he notched up a twelfth win in 2008.
