The Hennessy Gold Cup is the highlight of the jumps season at the Newbury racecourse, which will next take place on 27 November 2010. It was won in 2009 by the outstanding Denman, who had to carry the full load of 11-12 around the difficult course against a very talented field of Hennessy Gold Cup runners. Denman had previously won the race in 2007, before going on to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup the following March.
If betting on the Hennessy Gold Cup it is often a wise thing to double up the bet with an antepost wager on the Cheltenham Gold Cup this could certainly prove beneficial this season with Denman seemingly back to his very best.
The Hennessy Gold Cup was first run in 1957 and has seen many great horses win the race down the years of sports betting. Amongst them is the great Arkle, who won the race twice in 1964 and 1965, after which he went on, like Denman has since, to win the Gold Cup at Cheltenham.
Along with the Hennessy, the Paddy Power Gold Cup is another very important early season trial race for the Gold Cup and possibly even the Aintree Grand National later in the season.
Those looking to place a horse racing bet on the Hennessy Gold Cup or indeed the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the Grand National should review all the bookmaker options listed on this site and take advantage of the many free betting offers.
The most famous steeplechase of them all of course is the Grand National which is raced at the Aintree racecourse in Liverpool. This is probably the most famous race in the world and attracts the single biggest market of all races in the UK.
The race has produced many legends down the years, none more so than the great Red Rum who is the only horse to have won the race three times. He won in 1973, 1974 and 1977 and was second both times in the intervening years.
Last year’s winner, Mon Mome was the first 100/1 winner of the race since Foinavon won in 1967 both of which provided huge wins for the Bookmakers and big disappointments for the millions of punters who had their annual bet on the race.
