The Hennessy Gold Cup is the highlight of the jumps season at the Newbury racecourse. It was won in 2009 by the outstanding Denman, who had to carry the full load of 11-12 around the difficult course against a very talented field of Hennessy Gold Cup runners. Denman had previously won the race in 2007, before going on to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup the following March.
If betting on the Hennessy Gold Cup it is often a wise thing to double up the bet with an antepost wager on the Cheltenham Gold Cup.
The Hennessy Gold Cup was first run in 1957 and has seen many great horses win the race down the years of sports betting. Amongst them is the great Arkle, who won the race twice in 1964 and 1965, after which he went on, like Denman has since, to win the Gold Cup at Cheltenham.

Carruthers romped to victory in the 2011 renewal as he produced a tremendous front-running performance to come in from odds of 10/1. Mark Bradstock's 8-year-old won by three and three quarter lengths from Planet Of Sound, with Fair Along three quarters of a length further back. 9/2 ante-post favourite Aiteenthirtythree finished eleventh.
