The Betfair Grand National Trial, formerly the Totesport.com Grand National Trial, is an important race in the horse racing calendar that takes place in February each year at Haydock. It is important as it serves as a trial for the Grand National at Aintree in April, and it is a great opportunity for punters to check out form, place a few bets and learn plenty ahead of placing that ante-post bet for Aintree.
Formerly known as the Blue Square Gold Cup, the race itself takes place over a distance of 3 miles and 4 furlongs, with 22 fences to be negotiated, and it is a Grade 3 handicap race that is open to horses aged 5-years-old and over.
It boasts some impressive names on its winners board from the past, including Cool Ground who won in 1992 before going on the win the Cheltenham Gold Cup, and Party Politics who won the Grand National before winning the Grand National trial as odds on favourite.
