Home / Horse Racing / Greenham Stakes
The Greenham Stakes takes place in April each year at the prestigious Newbury racecourse. It is an exiciting time for betting as the flat race season begins to get into full swing with many involved in the world of horse racing looking towards the first 'Colts' Classics' of the season.
The race is open to 3-year-old thoroughbred colts and geldings, and it is a Group Three race over a 7 furlong distance. There is a prize fund of £65,000 available although that is not all that will be in the forefront of owners' and trainers' minds...
Like the Craven Stakes at Newmarket in April, the Greenham Stakes is seen as an important trial for those Colts Classics in European horse racing, particularly the 2000 Guineas, and it could be an ideal opportunity for a 'betting double' as previous Greenham Stakes contenders have gone on to enjoy Classics success - Greenham fourth in 1992, Rodrigo de Triano, went on to win the 2000 Guineas and 1998 Greenham winner, Victory Note, went on to win the French 2000 Guineas.
In terms of looking for successful trainers in the race in the hope of looking for the odds of horses from a certain stable it is worth noting that Richard Hannon has won the race five times (the joint most with Henry Cecil), including wins in 2007, 2008 and 2010.

The Greenham Stakes is seen as an important trial for the the 2000 Guineas as it is also open to 3-year-olds. In 1992 Rodrigo de Triano came fourth in the Greenham Stakes before going on to win the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket.
The 2000 Guineas is run on the Rowley Mile at Newmarket and is recognised as one of the 'Classics' of the season. It is run during late April or early May each year and as a hugely prestigious and historical race it is a betting opportunity not to be missed.
The very best in flat racing will be involved and there is sure to be plenty of interest in the ante-post odds......
