Greatwood Hurdle Betting

The Greatwood Hurdle is the highlight of the Sunday at The Open Meeting at Cheltenham during November each year. The race is the feature of the final Sunday and carries a prize purse of £100,000.

Some of the best hurdlers around will compete in this Grade 3 National Hunt, and it is open to 4 year olds and over. It is a handicap race and is run at the Cheltenham old course over a distance of 2 miles and 110 yards.

The race is the first trial for the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham Festival in March, although interestingly it has become more popular in recent times with the leading horses from the Supreme Novices' Hurdle as well. It is well worth keeping an eye an eye on the betting for both this race and Cheltenham, and consider those who perform well here when placing an ante-post bet for March. Also when considering the odds is is worth noting that historically there has been a trend for top weighted horses to finish in the first two, while 7 of the past 12 winners have been 5 years of age.

17-year-old amateur jockey Harry Derham picked up the biggest win of his career by guiding Paul Nicholls' Brampour to an impressive victory. The 4-year-old gelding surged home up the hill to beat Olofi by two and a half lengths, with Abergavenny in third, although 9/2 favourite Pateese could only finish eleventh.
