The Fighting Fifth Hurdle is one of the most, if not the most, prestigious hurdle event in the early part of the national season. The Grade One National Hunt race is for four year olds and over and takes place in late November or early December at Newcastle each year. It is run over 2 miles and there are 9 hurdles to be negotiated as horses compete for the £90,000 prize purse.
The event was inaugurated in 1969, and the 'Fighting Fifth' title comes from the nickname of the Royal Northumberland Fusiliers. There will be plenty of betting opportuities for the race itself and there are sure to be odds available for the 'Road To Cheltenham'. The race itself represents the first race in the 'Road to Cheltenham' which involves several races, including the Champion Trial at Haydock and International Hurdle at Cheltenham, before concluding with the Champion Hurdle at the national hunt season's pinnacle Cheltenham Festival.
In terms of placing a bet on the race, the Fighting Fifth Hurdle at Newcastle has seen a trend where 8 out of 11 of winners up to 2011 were in fact the ante-post favourites for the race. It is well worth looking at similar horses in the ante-post betting, while 5 year olds have won 5 out of the last 9 races, and 9 of 10 winners have won a grade 1 or 2 hurdle before the Fighting Fifth.

Overturn made all to make it back-to-back Fighting Fifth wins for Donald McCain Jr and in the process defeated the short priced favourite Binocular, who was once again a losing favourite in this race after he finished third in 2010.

The Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham Festival in March is the highest rated race for hurdlers and takes place on the first day of the festival.
It is the concluding race in the 'Road to Cheltenham' series, and 2010 saw the Nicky Henderson trained horse Binocular emerge as the surprise winner. Ridden by Tony McCoy, Binocular appeared certain to withdraw just a few weeks before the festival but an encouraging run a week before the race appeared to put him right. And so it proved as Binocular saw off Khyber Kim on the day.
This season's race is bound to provide a big talking point during the Cheltenham Festival...
