Home / Horse Racing / Eider Chase
The Eider Chase follows quickly after the Haydock Grand National Trial in the horse racing calendar as preparations for the National at Aintree begin to step up a notch and betting for the big one begins to gather pace.
The race is held at Newcastle racecourse towards the end of February each year and involves a distance of 4 miles and 1 furlong. It is seen as an important trial for the Grand National in April and offers an ideal opportunity for punters to gauge where horses are at in terms of form and where to place that ante-post bet for Aintree.
The last horse to win both the Eider Chase and the Grand National was Comply or Die as recently as 2008 which emphasises the importance of looking out for those odds at Newcastle and considering horses' prospects in April.
However, up to 2011 it is worth noting that in the five previous renewals the ante-post odds favourite has failed to win, while jockey Timmy Murphy could figure prominently in tips as he has enjoyed recent success with wins in the 2008 and 2009 renewals. It looks to be a wide open race in terms of past success for trainers as no one trainer stands out with Venetia Williams and David Pipe the most prominent trainers to claim winners.

The world famous Grand National takes place Aintree and is one of the most watched horse races in the UK as horses negotiate the four and half mile race and its 30 hurdles.
Eider Chase winner Comply or Die followed up with a win at Aintree in 2008 and tt is a race that makes legends out of horses. None more so than the great Red Rum who claimed victory three times in the 1970s.
It is a great opportunity for the punter, whether new or experienced, to get involved in the ante-post betting ahead of the big day at Aintree in April.....
