Over the years is has not become a great race for punters, with only four favourites and co favourites having won the race since 1978. Indeed, trainer, Jane Chapple-Hyam trained Mudawin who won the race in 2006 with odds of 100/1. The last two winners, All The Good in 2008 and Sesenta in 2009 were both 25/1outsiders. The last favourite to win in fact was Purple Moon, trained by Luca Cumani who with odds of 7/2 in 2007.

The Ebor handicap is also one of those very few races which is competed for by both Flat and National Hunt trainers. It seems strange to note that Sesenta in 2009 was trained by Irish National Hunt legend, Willie Mullins, while All The Good, was trained by the fabulously wealthy stable of Godolphin.

The race’s most famous winner is probably the legendary Sea Pigeon, who took the race in 1979. That race was unique in that the jockey was Jonjo O’Neill, who as a NH jockey took on the flat jockeys in the race and beat them. Sea Pigeon although the son of Sea bird, winner of the Epsom Derby in 1965, never made it as a flat racing horse, failing at group level and performing only modestly in Handicaps. He was then gelded and moved over to NH, where he excelled, winning amongst other major races, the Champion Hurdler twice. He also improved on the flat, winning this race in 1979 with a record weight of 10 stone and the Chester Cup twice in 1978 and 979.

There has been no particular trainer who has completely dominated this race, although entries made from Luca Cumani should be seriously respected as he has had three winners since, 1999.
