Home / Horse Racing / Duke Of York Stakes
The Duke of York Stakes takes place during the Dante Meeting at York Racecourse in May, and the three day meeting offers plenty of opportunities for punters to get involved in some flat race betting.
The race itself is open to thoroughbreds aged three and over, and it is recognised as a Group Two race. A prize purse of £100,000 is on offer as horses compete over six furlongs. Clearly over such a short distance explosive pace is crucial and that is well worth remembering when placing your ante-post bet.
Flat racing legend Lester Piggott is joint leader for most wins by a jockey with four, while no horse has won the race twice since Handsome Sailor in 1988 - which is something to consider when checking the odds.
The Duke of York Stakes is a great betting opportunity as many of the runners go on to compete in the Golden Jubilee Stakes at Ascot in May, so it could be worth a punt on a betting double for the two races and is a prime chance to check out the form of leading contenders.
The Dante meeting at York also includes the Epsom Derby trial, the Dante Stakes, and the Middleton Stakes.

The Dante Stakes takes place during the same Dante Meeting as the Duke of York Stakes at York racecourse in May. The race is seen as an important trial for the Epsom Derby and many runners have gone on to win both the Dante and the Derby.
Most recently, Authorized won both races in 2007 and it highlights the value of considering a betting double on both races with the odds on a double likely to be available at a great price.
Whether another horse can do the double remains to be seen but there is sure to be a high quality field in both races.....
