The December Gold Cup is run at Cheltenham in December and is over two miles and five furlongs on the New Course. It is a Class 1, Grade 3 race for 4 year olds and above and is one of the biggest races in December for Horse Racing Bets. Originally sponsored by Massey Ferguson, this prestigious handicap chase had a number of sponsors before settling with the title, the Tripleprint Gold Cup, in 1992.
In 2009 the race was won by Poquelin in a hack canter, he was second in the Paddy Power Gold Cup here at Cheltenham the previous month which is always a good form angle to consider the race before placing your Sports Bet.
In recent seasons champion trainer, Paul Nicholls has come into form around this time and it is always useful to look at his entries when considering your ante post December Gold Cup Bets. Nicholls trained 2009 winner, Poquelin.
The race is usually won by either the favourite or one high in the betting, thirty past winners have so far won the race with single figure odds, including ten out of the last twelve. 2007 winner, Tamarinbleu, trained by David Pipe and ridden by Denis O’Regan, was the longest priced winner in the races history, when he came at 22/1.
The 2010 renewal has changed it's name to the Vote A.P. Gold Cup, in a bid to raise awareness to Tony McCoy's plight to become Sports Personality of the Year from the BHA.
