Craven Stakes Betting

The Craven Stakes is an important trial race for the prestigious 2000 Guineas, particularly as it is run on the same Rowley Mile Course as the Guineas at Newmarket. It takes place each year during April and represents a great opportunity for punters to get involved, whether betting on the race itself or maybe taking advantage of the odds for a horse to do a Craven-Guineas double.

In 2004 Barry Hills' Haafhd did just that by winning the Craven Stakes and then going on to win the 2000 Guineas in the same season.

The Craven Stakes is open to 3-year-old thoroughbred colts and geldings, and the Group Three race offers a prize purse of £65,000. As the name Rowley Mile would suggest, the race is contended over a 1 mile distance and it an important part of the Craven Meeting at Newmarket in April. The Nell Gwyn Stakes is also held during the Craven Meeting.

The Greenham Stakes at Newbury in April is another race that is considered to be a trial for the 2000 Guineas and trainer Richard Hannon has enjoyed success in both the Craven and the Greenham Stakes. Hannon has trained four Craven winners, which is well worth remembering when considering the ante-post odds, although Sir Michael Stoute leads the way with five wins.
