Coventry Stakes Betting

The Coventry Stakes is an exciting Group Two race that usually takes place on the opening day of the Royal Ascot Meeting in June.

The meeting itself is a fantastic betting spectacle as it includes several group races, including the Ascot Gold Cup, the Queen Anne Stakes, the King's Stand Stakes and the Coronation Stakes.

The Coventry Stakes is a flat race for 2-year-old thoroughbreds and it involves a distance of six furlongs on the famous Ascot racecourse. It gets its name from the 9th Earl of Coventry following its establishment in 1890 and it has remained a popular race for punters ever since.

When looking at the racecard it is worth noting that winners of the race have often gone off at single figure odds, with nine of the last ten priced 8/1 or lower, although Landseer did upset the betting in 2001 by winning from a starting price of 20/1.

The race has also seen some exciting talent, with Canford Cliffs taking victory as 7/4 favourite in 2010 to give trainer Richard Hannon yet another winner. Hannon has an impressive record in the race and it is well worth looking out for contenders from his stables in the ante-post betting, although he has some way to go to match the record of seven winners that Frank Butters and Fred Darling achieved in the 1930s and 1940s.
