The Champion Stakes was run on the second day of the 2 day Newmarket Champions meeting, but moved in 2011 to Ascot and is now part of the British Champions' Day each year in October. The race is a Group One flat race over 1 mile and 2 furlongs. The race, one of the most prestigious in the country has been around since 1877 and is open to all ages and both genders.
The 2011 move to Ascot as part of the Jockey Club's plan to create a race day of champions, much like Arc day and the Breeders Cup.
Amongst its past winners is the fantastic Brigadier Gerard who won the race twice in 1971 and 1972. Other outstanding winners include, Triptych, who also won it twice in the 1980’s, Pebbles, New Approach and last year it was won by the Henry Cecil trained, Twice Over, who is likely to be among the leading contenders in the ante-post betting again this year.
From 2009, the race enjoyed special status, becoming part of the Breeders Cup Challenge series, which entitles the winner to run in the Breeders Cup Turf in the USA in November.

Cirrus Des Aigles claimed the richest race in the history of British horse racing as the 12/1 ante-post shot claimed a first Group One victory at the seventh attempt. The French raider overhauled 7/4 ante-post favourite So You Think in the final furlong, although the race was overshadowed by a ban for Cirrus Des Aigles' rider Christophe Soumillon, who was penalised under the new whip rules and also had to forgo his share of the prize money.

Raced on day 2 of the Newmarket Champions meeting is the world famous Cesarewitch which is one of the biggest betting races in the country.
It s a stayers handicap run over two miles and two furlongs and is always competed for by trainers from the Flat racing code and the National Hunt. However it is restricted to just 34 starters and punters should beware that it is a poor race for favourite backers.
The Cesarewitch forms part of the ‘Autumn double’ the other half being the Cambridgeshire, but this is raced in early October at Newmarket.
