The Champion Novice Hurdle is an exciting part of the Punchestown Festival in late April or early May and the whole meeting is a feast for betting enthusiasts and novice punters alike.
The Grade One national hunt race involves a distance of 2 miles and 9 hurdles, and it is open to novice hurdlers aged 5-years-old and over. It is traditionally dominated by the Irish stables with Willie Mullins and Noel Meade enjoying great success in recent years. Indeed Meade leads the way for trainers with five Champion Novice Hurdle wins and when considering the ante-post odds it could prove beneficial to look out for the Meade-trained contenders.
It always attracts a strong field and in the past several winners of the Champion Novice Hurdle have gone on to achieve great things in Grade 1 Hurdles. Moscow Flyer was winner in 2000 and went on to enjoy Queen Mother Champion Chase and Arkle Trophy at Cheltenham Festival, as did 2004 winner Brave Inca, who went on to win the Champion Hurdle in 2006 for Meade.
More recently Hurricane Fly claimed the 2009 Champion Novice Hurdle at Punchestown and went on to claim the 2011 Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham Festival. It highlights the quality and potential that is on offer at Punchestown and it could be worthwhile to look out for the odds of success stories in this Irish race for future hurdle races.
