The Champion Four Year Old Hurdle is one of the highlights and main betting spectacles on the final day of the exciting Punchestown Festival during late April or early May.
The race at Punchestown racecourse is a Grade 1 race for novice hurdles aged four years old, as the name would suggest, and it is a great opportunity for punters to look at the latest odds of prospective stars over the hurdles.
The race involves a distance of 2 miles and nine hurdlers, and like so many of the other races at the Festival it often involves runners from Cheltenham Festival - specifically the Triumph Hurdle. It offers a go chance to get involved in a betting double of a horse winning both races in the same season, although it is worth noting that the last horse to do so was Katarino in 1999.
Interestingly, 2008 winner Punjabi did go on to win the Champion Hurdle at Cheltenham in the following year though and it highlights the value of looking out for the success stories at Punchestown when considering the odds for feature races later in the year.
