The Celebration Mile is Group Two open to colts and fillies aged three years or older. It is run at Goodwood at the end of August and is used mainly as a trial race for the Group One, Queen Elizabeth ll Stakes at Ascot in September. The Queen Elizabeth Stakes has become a very important race due its winners receiving an automatic invitation to run in the Breeders Cup Mile.
The Celebration Mile has been on the racing calendar since 1967 and as its name suggests it is raced over 1 mile. It was once known as the Waterford Crystal Mile and has over the years seen some of the best milers in history take the honours. Its most famous winner was undoubtedly Brigadier Gerard, who won the race in 1971, but it is Chic, trained by Sir Michael Stoute who is the only horse to win the race twice, which she did so in 2004 and 2005. Stoute in fact is the trainer to follow in this race having won it 8 times since 1987 with six of those wins coming in the last decade.
Ravens Pass, trained by John Gosden in fact won the race in 2008 and then went on to win the QEll Stakes before going on to become the first English trained horse to win the Breeders Cup Classic.

The Breeders Cup is a two day meeting which will be held at the famous Churchill Downs racecourse in Kentucky in November. It hosts a total of 14 Grade or Group One races and will have even greater prize money this year than ever before. It is becoming regarded as a world championship of thoroughbred racing which is why the 14 races all have unique criteria.
British trainers are becoming more and more involved with the meeting, but are still prone to stay loyal to the turf racing that they are used to in Europe. That said the main feature of the meeting is the Breeders Cup Classic which is raced on an artificial surface which was won in 2008 by the John Gosden trained, Ravens Pass, who had earlier in the season won the Celebration Mile.
