Established in 1839, at the same time as the equally famous Cesarewitch, the Cambridgeshire Handicap is open to horses aged three years or more, and is run over a distance of 9 furlongs over the famous Rowley Mile at Newmarket. The race is always run on the final day of the three day Newmarket Cambridgeshire Festival, which in turn always takes place towards the end of September or in early October each year. The Cambridgeshire and the Cesarewitch form the well known Autumn double and have always been big betting handicaps. The race always attracts a large entry list with the field reaching its maximum capacity of 35 runners after final declarations have been made.
Another handicap race at Newmarket is the Cesareswitch, which was inaugurated around the same time as the Cambridgeshire.
Over the years only six horses have ever won the race twice, the most recent of these being Rambo’s Hall who won in 1989 and then again in 1992. The most recent winner was Supaseus a six year old trained by Hughie Morrison, who won with odds of 16/1. It was Morrison’s first winner of the race, but one trainer who seems to do well is John Gosden, who has trained the winners of the race in 1994, 2007 and 2008. Gosden it seems might well have the favourite to win the race this year too, with Nationalism, currently heading the betting with most, but not all Bookmakers.

The Cesarewitch is a flat handicap raced at Newmarket over a distance of 2 miles and 2 furlongs on the second day of Newmarket’s Champions meeting in October. It was created at much the same time as the Cambridgeshire and the two races have always been known as the Autumn double.
Like the Cambridgeshire the race attracts a large field and is one of the biggest betting races of the flat season. It is also one of a few handicaps that are taken on by National Hunt trainers, where they have had a great deal more success than Flat trainers in recent years.
