Home / Horse Racing / Brigadier Gerard Stakes
Originally called the Coronation Stakes, The Brigadier Gerard Stakes takes its name from the champion racehorse Brigadier Gerard, who won both the Westbury Stakes and Eclipse Stakes at Sandown Park.
Unsurprisingly the Brigadier Gerard Stakes is run at Sandown Park and it takes place each year towards the end of May. It has become an exciting betting spectacle for flat racing punters looking for value in the odds.
It is a Group Three race for thoroughbreds aged four years old and over, and it involves a race distance of 1 mile, 2 furlongs and 7 yards. Several horses have won the race twice, while Lester Piggott still holds the record for most wins in the race for a jockey with six victories.
Trainer Noel Murless leads the way for trainers with six wins, although the ante-post odds are likely to be dominated by horses from the stables of flat racing legends such as Sir Michael Stoute, Henry Cecil and Saeed Bin Suroor - all of whom have won the Brigadier Gerard Stakes in the past.
When considering a bet on the race, it is well worth noting the trend of success for 4 year olds in the race - six of the last nine winners have been four years of age - and it could well be worth looking out for highly rated four years olds in the odds this year.
Other highly rated flat races during May include:

The Epsom Derby is one of the most popular races for betting in the UK flat racing calendar as millions of pounds are gambled on it each year.
The Derby takes place each year in early June and is contested by some of the very best three year old thoroughbreds. It is raced over 1½ miles at great speed and there have been some great winners in the past, not least in 2009 when Sea The Stars claimed victory and went on to win the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe.
