Betfair Chase Betting

The Betfair Chase is an important race as the National Hunt horse racing season starts to get into full swing and punters, jockeys and trainers alike keep half an eye on the Cheltenham Gold Cup in March.

The Chase was first introduced in 2005, and is run during November each year. It is for 5 year olds and over, and horses compete at Haydock Park over a distance of 3 miles and 18 fences. It's a Grade 1 National Hunt race, and the prize purse is currently £200,000. Although when it was first introduced Betfair offered the 'Betfair Million' where a horse that won the Betfair Chase would be given £1 million if it succeeded in winning the subsequent King George VI Chase and the Cheltenham Gold Cup. The brilliant Kauto Star won the 'Betfair Million' during the 2006/2007 season, but the million was since changed and then dropped during 2009.

Kauto Star is something of a legend having won the Betfair Chase four times in six years since 2005, every time ridden by the legendary Ruby Walsh and trained by the great Paul Nicholls. Kauto Star's wins came in 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2011, and the importance of the race in the build up to the Cheltenham Gold Cup is highlighted by the fact he actually went on to win the Gold Cup in 2007, and again in 2009. Although in 2010 he did suffer a nasty fall at Cheltenham as the favourite which ended hopes of a third Gold Cup win.

Kauto Star produced a stunning jumping performance to defeat Cheltenham Gold Cup champion Long Run and his odds of winning the King George and the Gold Cup this season were immediately clipped in. Paul Nicholls' 6/1 shot was back to his best as he won the Betfair Chase for a fourth time, while Long Run was left eight lengths back on his seasonal reappearance, with Weird Al third.
