Betfair Denman Chase Betting

The Betfair Denman Chase, formerly the AON Chase, is a relatively new addition to the racing calendar but is one to look out for when placing your bets during the season as it is often used as a trial for the prestigious Cheltenham Gold Cup at Cheltenham Festival.

The race was known as the AON Chase up until 2012, when it was renamed the Betfair Denman Chase. It was named after Denman, who won the AON Chase in 2008 before going on to win the Cheltenham Gold Cup during the same season.

The race itself is run during February at Newbury each year over a distance of 3 miles, with 18 fences to be negotiated along the way. It is one of the principal trials for Cheltenham Festival in March and its importance is highlighted by its stellar list of previous winners.

Kauto Star and Denman have both gone on to win the Gold Cup in the same season they claimed this race at Newbury, so it might be worth looking out for winners' odds when considering your bet for the Festival.

Paul Nicholls' King George VI star Kauto Star won the 2007 renewal and went on to justify his ante-post favouritism to win the Gold Cup from Exotic Dancer, after he had started the race as 5/4 favourite.

When considering your ante-post betting for the Denman Chase and indeed the Gold Cup it is worth nothing that the Denman Chase is another race that Paul Nicholls has tended to dominate in recent years, as he too trains Denman and has trained seven of the twelve winners since the race was established in 2000.

Gold Cup winner Long Run was made to work hard in the final stages of the 2012 race as he claimed a narrow victory over Hennessy runner-up Burton Port. The ante-post favourite jumped well throughout and looked to have made a decisive move two out but was made to work hard in a race that provided ideal preparation for next month's Gold Cup.
