Aidan O’Brien looks likely to be entering a three strong Ballydoyle contingent to contest the Group One, Irish Champion Stakes over 10 furlongs at Leopardstown this weekend. They will be led by antepost favourite, Rip Van Winkle, impressive winner last time out of the Group One, Juddmonte International Stakes at York last month, over an extended 10 furlongs. Rip Van Winkle is being well backed and is currently available with odds of 4/5 from Ladbrokes. O’Brien has won this race five times in the last ten years, but had to be content with second place last year when Fame And Glory could not catch, Sea The Stars.
Twice Over, second in the International will attempt to take Rip Van Winkle on again, but will need to improve if he s to reverse placings. The Henry Cecil trained five year old was a length adrift at York despite finishing very strongly. Twice Over is second favourite with odds of 3/1.
Irish Champions Stakes Odds Comparison
Irish Derby winner, Cape Blanco, looks set to take his chance and to take on his Ballydoyle stablemate. Last seen when being slaughtered by Harbinger in the Group One, King George & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot, Cape Blanco would have to be in with a chance but may lack the speed over 10 furlongs to win the race. If his attempt at the French Derby is ignored then the 3 year old does have a sublime record with only one defeat, but it is difficult to see him winning this and the 5/1 on offer from Ladbrokes, com should be left alone in our book.
Trainer Mark Johnston might be ‘taking on more than he can chew’ by entering his Sea Lord, who will stepping up hugely in class. His last run was at Salisbury on 12th August where he won the Group Three, Sovereign Stakes, and had subsequent Celebration Mile winner, Poets Voice a nose behind in second. It looks good form but a long way off the form of those opposing him in this. Nonetheless he is being backed and is currently available at 12/1 which may represent each way value, but not for us!

If there is a horse to back each way it might well be the Dermot Weld trained, Famous Name who is looking for a four timer. He won at Group Three level last time out in July, where he had the once highly rated Aidan O’Brien trained, Steinbeck behind. This five year old has won at Leopardstown five times so far, including his last three and whilst he too will be stepping up in class he is a strong horse who could easily shake them up during the race. At 20/1 he is certainly worth a closer look.
Selection 1: Rip Van Winkle to win @ 4/6 (£50 Bet wins £75)
Selection 2: Famous Name each way @ 20/1 (£25 Bet wins a maximum of £625)
4/5 Rip Van Winkle
3/1 Twice Over
5/1 Cape Blanco
12/1 Sea Lord
10/1 Cavalryman
20/1 Famous Name
33/1 Beethoven
